Overview

We have an exciting opportunity as an Associate Laboratory Analyst to join our team! 

 

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of complex chemical, biological, and physical tests of water and wastewater, including samples for process control and compliance, as necessary and required for research, development or quality control.  Compiles and maintains data and other records required for reports. Assists in special studies in the laboratory and in the field.

Minimum Salary: $52,100 (Grade 6)

Responsibilities

  • Performs trace contaminant analysis using benchtop equipment following EPA, Standard Methods, and/or laboratory SOPs within established holding times.  Assists or performs investigative analyses such as equipment troubleshooting, jar testing, or break point determinations.  Supports responses to customer inquiries by performing wet chemistry analysis following established procedures.
  • Prepares chemical solutions used in performing water analysis following standardized formulas or experimental procedures.  Assists in maintaining an inventory of chemical stores and general supplies.  Maintains balance, refrigerator, freezer, and other logbooks necessary to demonstrate compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).  
  • Records and computes results from test data and maintains quality control records and charts as outlined by the Quality Assurance Program.  Collects and logs all Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) documents for chemical stores.  Logs samples and enters data into LIMS accurately. Informs Laboratory Supervision immediately of any personnel, equipment, instrument and material problems and SOP or methodology deviations.  Responds to and documents any necessary corrective action.  
  • Sets up benchtop equipment required for tests, research, or process control following QA procedures.  Cleans and makes minor repairs on laboratory apparatus and benchtop equipment and ensures a high standard of housekeeping, quality control, and safety.  Calibrates benchtop equipment as necessary to maintain high quality data.
  • Provides 24-7 analytical support, as necessary, for lift station overflows and emergencies as part of an on-call rotation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED, plus two (2) years college course work in biology, chemistry, environmental science or related field or a combination of relevant education and work experience that is equivalent to two (2) years.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to work a variable work schedule such as nights, weekends, and/or holidays as part of an on-call rotation to support analytical obligations for operations.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license issued in the United States and the ability to drive utility vehicles.
  • Ability to adhere to Company policies and procedures and to quickly develop proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc.

 

Preferred Skills/Qualifications                   

  • Ability to perform accurate, repeatable work, to correlate data, makes logical analysis and interprets quality control parameters.
  • Proficiency with computerized lab equipment, data management and related systems.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume new responsibilities.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  
  • Ability to deal with non-verbal symbolism (formulae, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in more difficult phases.
  • Ability to work with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
