We have an exciting career opportunity for a Wastewater Electrical Systems Specialist to join our team! 

 

The Wastewater Electrical Systems Specialist (ESS) is a critical role responsible for ensuring the safety, compliance, and reliability of electrical systems within the wastewater treatment facility. As the plant’s subject matter expert on electrical safety and regulatory compliance, the ESS develops and reviews scopes of work for electrical, control, and instrumentation projects, leads the creation of safe work plans, and oversees both in-house and contractor-led electrical work. The ESS collaborates with the Area Maintenance Supervisor and the Controls System Supervisor to manage critical preventive and corrective maintenance, provides technical training, and maintains comprehensive documentation to support operational excellence.

Minimum Hourly Wage: Competitive Salary (Grade 9).

Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, and approve electrical scopes of work, drawings, and procedures to ensure compliance with codes (e.g., NFPA 70E, NEC, OSHA) and plant-specific requirements. Participate in capital project design reviews to prioritize maintainability, safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Conduct inspections of electrical installations to verify safety, quality, and compliance with NFPA 70E, NEC, OSHA, and other relevant standards.
  • Oversee contractor electrical work, including pre-job planning, on-site observations, and final inspections to ensure adherence to specifications and safety protocols.
  • Serve as the Qualified Electrical Person (QEP) for energized work assessments, arc flash boundary evaluations, and lockout/tagout procedures. Provide technical training and coaching to Area Supervisors and craftspeople to enhance electrical safety and competency.
  • Develop and maintain plant-wide electrical safety standard operating procedures (SOPs), preventive maintenance schedules, and lockout/tagout protocols.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for electrical systems, including one-line diagrams, panel schedules, arc flash labels, and work permits.
  • Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis for recurring or critical electrical system issues to ensure operational continuity.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in electrical engineering technology, electrical engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in electrical work within industrial, municipal, or utility settings (e.g., as an electrician, electrical engineer, or electrical project manager).
  • In-depth understanding of NFPA 70E, NEC, and OSHA electrical safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in reviewing and interpreting electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and construction documents.
  • Hands-on experience operating and maintaining medium-voltage (13.8kV to 4kV) electrical distribution systems and double-ended, high-amperage low-voltage (480V) switchgear.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to work independently, make informed decisions, and issue stop-work orders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel).
  • Must have and maintain a valid Indiana driver’s license.
  • Must have a safe driving record including no history of serious traffic violations, accidents, suspensions/revocations, or DUI/DWI convictions within the last three years.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:                      

  • Journeyman or Master Electrician certification.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLCs, motor controls, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and low-voltage systems.
  • Certification or formal training in NEC, NFPA 70E, or OSHA electrical safety standards.
  • Experience using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
